Her drawings address many issues, from social commentary to the Israeli occupation.
“I focus on the human aspect, it’s the thing I strive to show in my art,” Abu Athrah tells The Electronic Intifada.
“Israeli occupation affects us severely,” she says.
“Since I am a human being in this community, it affects me and is reflected in my work.”
Abu Athrah has been invited to art conferences abroad but hasn’t been able to travel outside the Gaza Strip due to Israel’s restrictions.
“It’s the roadblock in the way of my career,” she said.
“We have a right to a dignified life, just like anyone else in the world. To live in security and safety, to exercise our right and enjoy the most basic things.”
