EI accepts Voices of Peace Award at ADC conference

Two Electronic Intifada co-founders, Ali Abunimah and Nigel Parry, were at the 20th National Convention of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee in Washington DC on 14 June 2003 to accept the ADC’s Voices of Peace Award on behalf of the founders of EI and sister site Electronic Iraq. The award was presented to EI and eIraq “in recognition of its commitment to bringing the concerns, voices, and experiences of the Iraqi and Palestinian peoples to audiences the world over via the Internet.”

EI/eIraq’s Nigel Parry (L) and Ali Abunimah (C) are presented the award by ADC Communications Director Hussein Ibish.

Ali Abunimah notes that, although we already own the domain names for electronicSyria.net, electronicLebanon.net, electronicEgypt.net, etc., “it is the job of everyone here to ensure we never have to use them.”

Nigel Parry talks about the continuum of efforts that EI and eIraq’s founders have participated in, from the original Birzeit University website (1996), through the On The Ground In Ramallah website (1996) that was the first alt.news site produced from within a warzone, to the Addameer September 2000 Clashes website, to EI and eIraq. Parry noted that these projects have won the respect and admiration of hundreds of thousands of people but noted that all of these projects have been run on a shoestring budget and asked “What would we be capable of if we actually had the resources?”
